How many times have you tried to give up sugar? Maybe it’s every day? Maybe each morning you commit to not eating sugar, but then…something happens and before you know it you’re submerged in a sea of chocolate wrappers. How did your mind suddenly become hijacked by sugar. You then spend countless hours self-flagellating. Why did I do that? What can’t I control what food I put into my mouth?
If this is you, I get it. I’ve been there. I’ve stood in front of the refrigerator eating frozen cookies in too much of a frenzy to wait for them to thaw. I’ve cancelled dinner plans for fear that I won’t be able to say no to dessert. I’ve justified my sugar addiction by stating that the extra 10 pounds I was carrying was age. It wasn’t – it was because I was eating cookies most nights!
I knew all about the effects of sugar on the body…but somehow I couldn’t stop. No 21-day sugar detox was going to work for me. I’d crack at the three day mark. Something was amiss. I wasn’t addressing the physical and emotional attachment I had to sugar. I had low serotonin levels and pathogenic microbes in my gut, both which were telling my brain to eat sugar like a crazed-lunatic! I’d also created a 10pm sugar eating habit and I was subconsciously using sugar to plug a childhood wound of not-good enough. It was little wonder I couldn’t stick to a sugar detox plan.
Today, sugar and I have a peaceful relationship. I can gracefully say yes or no to sugar without any of the mind games. I’ve also created a deeply fulfilling life instead of using sugar to falsify the highs.
